Novembre 1631, una delle date più importanti nella storia della Serenissima che ha ripercussioni tutt’ora nella vita di ogni veneziano.
Tra il 1630 ed il 1631 Venezia dovette contare circa 47.000 morti a causa di una epidemia di peste bubbonica, la stessa descritta dal Manzoni ne “i promessi sposi”.
La peste si stava diffondendo sempre più velocemente nella città veneta e così il 22 ottobre 1630 il Doge, massima autorità della Repubblica veneta, fece un voto alla Madonna che, se avesse debellato la città dalle pestilenza avrebbe costruito una chiesa in suo onore. E così fu, poco dopo il voto l’epidemia ebbe un brusco calo per poi arrestarsi definitamente nel novembre dell’anno successivo.
La basilica, commissionata al Longhena, è in tipico stile barocco e venne consegnata ai veneziani nel 1687. Da quell’anno è stata scelta la data di presentazione della Vergine Maria al tempio, il 21 novembre, come giornata di commemorazione per quell’evento.

Between 1630 and 1631 Venice had to count about 47,000 deaths due to an epidemic of bubonic plague, the same described by Manzoni in "the betrothed".
The plague was spreading faster and faster in the Venetian city and so on 22 October 1630 the Doge, the highest authority of the Venetian Republic, made a vow to the Madonna that, if she had defeated the city from the plague, she would have built a church in her honor. And so it was, shortly after the vote the epidemic fell sharply and then stopped definitively in November of the following year.
The basilica, commissioned by the Longhena, is in typical Baroque style and was handed over to the Venetians in 1687. From that year the date of the presentation of the Virgin Mary at the temple, November 21, was chosen as a commemoration day for that event.
