La tempesta è uno degli indiscussi capolavori del Rinascimento veneto. Fu dipinta da Giorgione (1477-1510), probabilmente su commissione dal nobile veneziano Gabriele Vendramin per la sua collezione privata. L’opera è universalmente riconosciuta come la migliore prova dell’artista. Dal 1932, è conservata presso le Gallerie dell’Accademia di Venezia.
Il quadro ha per protagonista un paesaggio fluviale, per l’esattezza uno scorcio di campagna veneta raffigurato in un tardo pomeriggio estivo, prima dell’arrivo di un temporale. Sullo sfondo si distende un ridente paesino, improvvisamente illuminato da un fulmine.
In primo piano, a sinistra, si scorge la figura di un giovane e baldanzoso soldato, che bilancia quella più rassicurante, a destra, di una donna seminuda che allatta.
I due personaggi non dialogano fra di loro, non si relazionano, non sembrano neppure conoscersi. Non vi è certezza che l’uomo sia il padre del bambino e che stia vigilando sulla sua famiglia. La donna, d’altro canto, appare inquieta e preoccupata: volge lo sguardo verso l’osservatore come se temesse per sé stessa e per il piccolo. Questa incongruità è capace di comunicare una misteriosa tensione.

The tempest is one of the undisputed masterpieces of the Venetian Renaissance. It was painted by Giorgione (1477-1510), probably commissioned by the Venetian nobleman Gabriele Vendramin for his private collection. The work is universally recognized as the best proof of the artist. Since 1932, it has been kept at the Galleries of the Venice Academy.
The picture has as its protagonist a river landscape, to be precise, a glimpse of the Venetian countryside depicted in a late summer afternoon, before a thunderstorm arrives. In the background lies a charming little town, suddenly illuminated by lightning.
In the foreground, to the left, you can see the figure of a young and bold soldier, who balances the most reassuring, right, of a half-naked woman nursing.
The two characters do not interact with each other, they do not relate, they do not even seem to know each other. There is no certainty that the man is the father of the child and that he is watching over his family. The woman, on the other hand, appears restless and worried: she turns her gaze to the observer as if she feared for herself and for the little one. This incongruity is capable of communicating a mysterious tension.
